The time has come to drop everything you’re doing and stop everything you’re thinking about, and turn your attention to the art world. Art Basel is back for another winter; but with miles of sandy beaches, the show based in Miami sets a scene far from the season. The iconic city has become littered with art museums, Art Deco architecture as well as fun-fueled night life antics. Lasting from today, Wednesday 04.12.2014 to Sunday 06.12.2014, Art Basel Miami Beach will attract people in there thousands and exhibit many, from the masters to the emerging. Name: Hugo McCloud
Hometown: Redwood City, CA
Bringing his industrial tools to Art Basel, self-taughht McCloud creations are constructed from various materials you would more likely find on a building site – brass, black tar, silver paint for rooftops. The works. But these nontraditional materials create the opposite of their expectations; McCloud manipulates them into a new form of beauty. He takes the considered ‘waste’ and gives it a new purpose. It exposes the relationship between the viewer and the object; he creates it and revels in it with large, unusual and urban constructions.
Hometown: British-born, L.A. based
Kesh has been a name tingling on tongues for some time. She has gathered up much attention with collaboration with American Apparel and fans such as Jeremy Scott. In case you’re not familiar, her works are graphic black and white; they feature angular shapes and striking designs. Recruited for Art Basel 2014, Kesh has asked friend and fellow creative Dev Hynes from Blood Orange along for the ride. There is no doubt, whatever the two have to offer will be undoubtedly brilliant.
Name: Daniel Arsham
Hometown: Raised in Miami, New York-based
Arsham returns to Miami for Art Basel. And with him he brings his site-specific installation. He has dug up a trench in the gallery floor, and then filled it with debris comprising of 20th century media. Never one to disappoint, Arsham at Art Basel is set to be as thought-provoking and convention bending as usual. With his show Daniel Arsham welcomes people in with one phrase, Welcome to the Future.
Name: Stevie Nicks
Music royalty steps onto Miami soil and sand. Stevie Nicks’ Selfies will be shown at Dream South Beach and as something of a ‘once in a lifetime’ chance show, it is definitely unmissable. The images date between 1975 and 1987; they expose a rare intimacy and personal relationship Nicks has with herself. It charts the selfie before smartphones and social media; it shows the selfie in a candid and muted light.
Name: FKA Twigs
Hometown: Gloucestershire, UK
Those who know anything about Art Basel Miami, know there is more on offer than visual art-forms. Aural art is also in abundance. After-hours is just as important as the day-time scene. Sky-rocketing artist, FKA Twigs, is among this group of performers to grace Miami. She will be performing with hip-hop producer Clams Casino on the YoungArts Campus. No matter way to finish a day full of exhibition seeing and art analysing than with a dreamy and woozy performance from the alien-beauty herself.
Name: Jamian Juliano-Villani
Hometown: Basking Risge, NJ
Bright, graphic, cartoon-like, bubbling, energetic, fizzy, colourful – just a few words which come to mind when looking at Jamian Juliano-Villani’s work. She takes inspiration from the ingredients of television, and references it within every creation. Other influences tilt towards anime and animation. Formed using acrylic, every work is layered and intricately put together. A feast for the eyes, her show will not disappoint.
