David August is no doubt one of electronic music’s most captivating talents, his stirring techno compositions hitting a nerve where many others fail. Always one to step away from the crowd (though, it seems, without actively trying to), his recent Boiler Room set with the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester blew his growing fanbase away, and got them licking their lips for new music.
“‘The Spell / A Golden Rush’ to me personally closes a musical chapter and sets an end to a certain way I have been approaching production and writing music in general… What the future holds will be of a different nature. One I have come to embrace, but have not fully explored yet.” – David August
‘The Spell’ arrived just in time, and what a release it is. The rolling background synth and eerie organ accompaniments tick all the boxes in terms of the mystical, twisted sentiments that a track with this title merits. Yet the real twist comes with the beat. Rather than go with a techno rhythm – which has played host to his enchanting music in the past – this track dives head first into Drum & Bass territory.
‘The Spell’ is the first taste of new music from August since the release of his EP, J.B.Y/Ouvert, in March – and we won’t have to wait much longer for even more. His next EP, The Spell/A Golden Rush, is due out on November 4th via Ninja Tune imprint Counter Records, something that will no doubt deliver at the hands of David August.
