If there’s one thing you must know about Puma Blue, it’s that he will effortlessly pluck at your heartstrings. Real name Jacob Allen, the South Londoner is making a name for himself through his moving productions, the latest of which – Swum Baby – exemplifies both his quiet ambition and unique late-night sound, having worked on every single element of the EP himself.

Swum Baby unfurls with ‘(She’s) Just A Phase’, featuring the unlikely yet powerful combination of heavy reverb, soft brass notes and vocals that soar into an angelic falsetto. ‘Soft Porn’, the most recent single from the EP, falls back into an analogue dimension while evoking a sense of vulnerability and sensuality. The track’s subtle underlying hum reflects the crackle of a 4am phone call, the hazy lyrics mirroring the intoxicated slurs that most come to regret the next morning. ‘Lil Lude [dark embrace]’ channels an atmospheric yet refined R&B vibe while ‘Untitled 2’ strips everything down to its bare bones, highlighting the skewed blues melodies and remarkably delicate vocals.

The EP drifts to a close with ‘Want Me’, displaying all of the qualities that makes Swum Baby stand out from the crowd: jazzy saxophone runs, woozy guitar, and Allen’s ever-so-soft voice. “Now that I’ve had just a taste you’ve got me so enticed,” he sings on the final track, echoing our very own thoughts about his EP.
