If you’re the kind of person who struggles to make up their mind, then Sam Wills’s electronic-infused soul will be music to your ears – and good music, at that. Hailing from the land down under, the singer and musician has been working with similarly genre-hopping talents such as Tom Misch and Jordan Rakei of late, yet now it’s all eyes on Wills as he releases his debut EP, So Bright.
Up first is the fizzy ‘Electrified’, a suitable title for an equally electrifying track, produced by UK maestro Karma Kid. His trademark brand of inflating synth pairs perfectly with Wills’s quivering voice, which sails over the top in swirling motions. Next up comes the title track, ‘So Bright’, which allows old-school R&B influences to come to the forefront. Channelling vocals and rhythms reminiscent of Craig David, Wills creates a nostalgic feel, all while carving out a different stance by way of the electronic touches that ripple throughout the EP.
‘Light On Me’ slows the pace back down again as Wills’s voice softens into a heavenly swoon, topped off with gliding guitar licks and crisp percussion. Finishing off the release comes ‘Unify’, which brings jerky rhythms together with attitude-laden vocals and melodies bursting with energy. The four tracks are an impressive first overall offering from Wills, who’s well on his way to affirming his position as one of music’s most exciting names.
