After announcing they were back together again and an upcoming 3rd album a few weeks ago, The xx last week teased a minute long clip of some of their new sounds. The cinematic instrumental certainly got fans excited, and was later revealed to be a preview of new single, On Hold, released just a few days ago. It’s hard to believe that we haven’t heard from The xx for four years now, back when second album Coexist was put out into the world, but yesterday the final confirmation we’d all been waiting for was released – new album I See You will be with us January 13th 2017.
Judging by what we can gage from On Hold, Jamie xx, who has been doing his own musical rounds in the band’s absence, is making his upbeat solo mixes more prevalent within the collective’s sound. It’s all a bit more cheerful, and certainly dancier (which can totally be used as a word in this context), than what we have typically come to expect from the emotional, cry your heart out tunes of Coexist. We’re loving the merging of Jamie xx’s two worlds to form one musical masterpiece, that really shows The xx’s evolution over the past four years. Amazing back then, sounding even better now. Certainly something to look forward to in the new year.
